Chrysler, Dodge cars to get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto

The recently created Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is updating the technology on its Chrysler and Dodge cars, trucks, and SUVs. This long loved line of innovative automobiles will now be outfitted with a brand new version of the Uconnect technology that’s been available in the Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep automobiles for the past few years now. While the current Uconnect system works well, the updated version will allow the owners of the new Chrysler and Dodge vehicles to use Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The new Uconnect will be available beginning with the 2016 model year Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep automobiles. ┬áTo see any Chrysler or Dodge vehicles, check them out at Chapman Dodge.

The old Uconnect 8.4 navigational system is currently found in vehicles like the Dodge Charger and comes with an Yelp app integrated into it. But according to the announcement made by FCA, the parent company of the Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep brands, the updated Uconnect infotainment system will enable drivers and passengers to do much more. During the announcement at CES, the company explained that the new Uconnect not only will start up faster, have Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a number of other new features, the touchscreens will respond a lot quicker as well. That’s sure to increase the occupants’ level of enjoyment.

The current Uconnect 8.4 navigational system that’s available on many models of Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles allows drivers to access the digital audio and navigation system and make hands-free phone calls using an 8.4-inch touchscreen. It also lets occupants of the vehicle do online destination searches powered by a data connection. The new Uconnect adds a capacitive touchscreen and the ability to plug in Android and iPhones into the car and use touch and voice commands to access the phone’s apps, texting, navigation, and other features, and you can check them out, when available, at Las Vegas Dodge.

This is an important step forward for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Many of its competitors already have this technology available throughout their vehicle lines. Some of the automotive companies which already have in-car technology which connects to Android Auto and Apple Carplay include Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Chevrolet, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Subaru, Suzuki, and Volvo.
Acura, Bentley, Infiniti, Maserati, Renault, Seat, Skoda, and Volkswagen have Android Auto. BMW, Citroen, Ferrari, Jaguar-Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, and Toyota go with Apple CarPlay.

Adding an upgraded Uconnect is a great move for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. It moves them to the head of the class in terms of connectivity. While it takes more than that to sell automobiles, having improved connectivity can’t hurt. With a growing number of car enthusiasts also being into the latest hands-free technology, having both Android Auto and Apple Carplay might push people that are on the fence a little closer to buying a Dodge, Chrysler, or Jeep auto mobile.

The leadership at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles hasn’t yet said which of their models will be equipped with the new Uconnect system. However, in their press release they did say that it would be available in some of their automobiles in the 2016 model year.
